Finding Inner Peace

Feeling discouraged? Lacking that sense of inner peace? Well, you are probably in very good company. All that you have to do is go into any bookstore and look in the self-help section. You will always find it huge variety of publications from “experts” who claim to have the secret to finding true enlightenment. The trouble is that there are so many different opinions and options readily available that we can often become confused very easily.

Finding inner peace is not something that happens instantly. It is a process. You can always start by asking yourself if you are more peaceful now than you were a year ago. If the answer is yes, then you must be doing something right. If not, then perhaps it’s time to make a few changes. The best psychics & gurus I have ever met focus on making long term changes & changing a routine every day until positivity becomes a routine.

Almost all of the self-help books and seminars online will have the same basic principle, the need to spend a bit of quality time each morning in self-contemplation. Some people refer to this as “meditation”. Others may call it “praying”. But whatever you call it, if you want to extract more peace and tranquility into your life, then start including a little peace and tranquility into your daily schedule regularly, just like reaching for that first cup of coffee in the morning. Over time, the seed of inner peace that you have planted will begin to sprout and grow.

Believe it or not, when some people first began to incorporate this practice of daily meditation or quiet time into their morning rituals, they can quickly become even more discouraged. Their minds begin to wander. Am I doing this right? Should I be sitting with my legs crossed? What am I supposed to be thinking? While these are all very valid questions, the simple truth is that none of this really matters. The act of meditation is a very personal and individual experience. Your practice may differ greatly from someone else’s, and that is perfectly acceptable.

The only goal that you should have in mind when you first began to meditate is to simply try to quiet the mind. Close your eyes. Relax. There is no right or wrong method to finding inner peace, unless you accidentally fall asleep. Where people get discouraged is when they overanalyse and prejudge every aspect of the meditation process. You need to “get out of your head”. Remember what you are trying to do. You are trying to clear the mind. You are basically trying to “do nothing”. So how is it possible to get frustrated while doing nothing?

Think about the last time you tried to train your dog to “sit”. You might be successful in getting him to sit, but teaching him to “stay” is a whole other challenge itself. People are exactly the same way. We know how to sit, but we don’t know how to sit and be still. In telephone tarot readings I often have to insist that people simply close their eyes & zone out before the reading as you can feel the crazy energy coming down the line. For dogs, we need to give them a little extra treat now and then, a reward for good behaviour and a job well done. For humans, we need to adopt the same approach. Give yourself a break. Start out slowly. Try staying quiet and still for only five minutes per day. Keep a calendar of your daily meditation schedule, and reward yourself every so often for a job well done. Before you know it, that feeling of being discouraged will gradually fade into a sense of inner peace.
