Astrology & Tarot – The Four elements
Since the middle ages, through the renaissance & up to today many doctrines contain reference to the four basic elements.
Western Astrology connects the four classical elements with astrological charts & horoscopes. A fifth element, beyond the material world & related to the senses, the concept of spirit is also recognised in many cultures. Ethyr is a concept of a formless and invisible medium or substance that pervades the cosmos.
The Four Classical Elements
The 12 signs of the Zodiac are separated into 4 elements, Fire, Earth, Air and Water. The qualities of the signs together with the planetary influence enable us to draw a profile analysis of a subject. The four aces of the Tarot suits are the embodiment of each of their respective elements.
FIRE…Aries, Leo, Sagittarius…People of fire signs are explosive,volatile, energetic. They are leaders, inventors and adventurers. Their weaknesses are the tendency towards perfectionism & and burn-out, the fire signs often bounce from project to unfinished project. The Fire attributes are best counterbalanced by the Earth signs.
In Tarot the Fire signs correspond to the creativity of Wands.
EARTH…Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn…People of Earth signs are practical, cautious and reliable. Their downfall can be failing to accept the input of those around them. The Earth attributes are best counterbalanced by the emotionality of the Water signs.
The Earth signs are represented by the solidity of the Suit of Pentacles in Tarot.
AIR…Gemini, Libra, Aquarius…Air signs are responsible for the intellectual activity, thought and philosophy. People who possess many planets in the Air signs are good planners and intellectual in outlook. Logic and rationality form the basis of Air signs interactions that can make them appear detached and unearing . Without Air signs, subjects may have difficulty in communication, and be weak in artistic inclination. The excess of planets in Air signs are counterbalanced by the planets in the Water signs.
The Air signs are embodied in the analytical Suit of Swords.
WATER…Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. These are the emotional signs. The planets in Water sign moderate the practicality of Earth, the ideas of Air, the careless energy of Fire.
In astrological interpretation, the element analysis is the most traditional. For example, many planets in the Fire sign of a chart is indicative of the subject being very lively and enthusiastic.
